KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7– The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing, driven by the increasing availability of charging stations in the country.

According to Director of Sentinel Automotive Sdn Bhd, Mohamed Reza Abdul Mutalib, the encouraging growth is driven by the government’s strong commitment in developing the EV industry’s ecosystem.

“The demand for electric vehicles in Malaysia has increased very rapidly in the last two to three years. Three years ago, I mean in terms of electric vehicles, we rarely heard of or saw them on the roads,” he said.

“But now, in 2024, electric vehicles account for about 2 to 3 percent of the total industry. So, three years ago it was almost zero, but now it has reached 2 percent. This is a result of government support and this trend is expected to continue to grow,” he added.

He said this after the launch of the Zeekr 009 and the Zeekr X Debut electric cars, in the capital.

The Geely-owned premium EV manufacturer has officially opened sales for both models.

Zeekr Malaysia is distributed by Sentinel Automotive Sdn Bhd for the local market.
