Private Sector Collaboration Crucial For Achieving Net-Zero 2050 Goals – Nik Nazmi

SHAH ALAM, Nov 28 (Bernama) — Private sector collaboration is crucial to Malaysia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

He said that partnerships with the private sector can accelerate the transition to cleaner, more energy-efficient transport solutions, which are vital to the nation’s sustainability agenda.

“One such collaboration which I would like to highlight today is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in November 2022, between Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Volvo Trucks) and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC).

“This MoU is a step forward in accelerating the adoption of sustainable technology in the commercial vehicle sector, ” he said, during a speech at the launch of Volvo’s latest range of heavy-duty trucks.

Nik Nazmi highlighted that the transportation sector accounts for approximately 20 per cent of Malaysia’s total greenhouse gas emissions, and it represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

“Economic activities are the engine that drives our nation’s development forward. However, as we advance, we must also acknowledge the environmental footprint that comes with growth, ” he said.

He added that the government is implementing comprehensive measures, including the recently approved National Climate Change Policy 2.0, which was adopted on Sept 25.

“This policy integrates global commitments, such as the Paris Agreement, and establishes a robust framework for transitioning to a low-carbon economy, ” he said.

Additionally, he highlighted that the government is expected to table the Climate Change Bill in Parliament next year.

“This landmark legislation, once enacted, will be instrumental in ensuring the effective implementation of not only the new climate change policy, but also other policies, such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, among others, ” he said. — BERNAMA
