INDICATOR INSTRUMENT FACTSHEET INDICATOR: MATERIALS SUB-INDICATOR: SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS 1. INDICATOR INFORMATION 1.1. GOALS AND TARGETS Goal 1: Encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle. The goal of this instrument is mapped to the following global goals and National targets: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns a) SDG Target 12.4: Responsible management of chemical and waste b) SDG Target 12.6: Encourage companies, especially large and transnational companies, to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle. i) SDG Target Indicator 12.6.1: Number of companies publishing sustainability reports. 1.2. DEFINITIONS AND CONCEPTS 2.1. DEFINITION Organisation: The entity undergoing the evaluation. Baseline year: A reference point in time against which a measure of consumption and/or production in the present and/or future is measured. Sustainable material: Sustainable materials are materials that are produced and used in a way that minimises environmental impact and reduces the depletion of natural resources. These materials are often produced using renewable resources, are non-toxic, and are biodegradable or recyclable, for example, clay, rock, sand, bamboo, or materials with eco-label. Circular economy: A circular economy is an economic system in which resources are used, reused, and recycled in a closed loop, rather than being extracted, used, and then discarded as waste.
