SHAH ALAM: Private sector collaboration is crucial to Malaysia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. He emphasized that partnerships with the private sector can accelerate the transition to cleaner, more energy-efficient transport solutions, which are vital to the nation’s sustainability agenda.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nik Nazmi highlighted a significant collaboration between Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Volvo Trucks) and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in November 2022, marks a step forward in adopting sustainable technology in the commercial vehicle sector. He discussed this during a speech at the launch of Volvo’s latest range of heavy-duty trucks.
Nik Nazmi pointed out that the transportation sector accounts for approximately 20 percent of Malaysia’s total greenhouse gas emissions, presenting both a challenge and an
opportunity. He acknowledged the environmental impact of economic activities, which drive national development.
He mentioned that the government is implementing comprehensive measures, such as the recently approved National Climate Change Policy 2.0, adopted on September 25. This policy integrates global commitments, including the Paris Agreement, and establishes a framework for transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
Additionally, Nik Nazmi stated that the government plans to table the Climate Change Bill in Parliament next year. This legislation will be crucial in ensuring the effective implementation of the new climate change policy and other policies like the National Energy Transition Roadmap and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.
