The Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) continues to drive the nation’s sustainable energy and green mobility agenda, ensuring that Malaysia’s economic development aligns closely with environmental sustainability.
MGTC Group CEO Ir. Ts. Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor articulates, “Our vision is to be the leading partner for green growth and climate action, formulating low carbon initiatives and programmes in line with Malaysia’s goal of becoming a Net Zero GHG Emission Nation by 2050.” This vision underscores MGTC’s commitment to bold climate action while ensuring shared economic prosperity.
As an agency under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), MGTC spearheads the nation’s green growth, climate change mitigation, and the adoption of green lifestyles. This aligns seamlessly with national policies like the National Green Technology Policy (NGTP), the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP), and the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP).
MGTC’s mission is multifaceted, encompassing the mainstreaming of the green economy, the mitigation of climate change, and the promotion of green living. Initiatives such as the MyHIJAU Mark Certification Program, the Green Technology Financing Scheme (GTFS), and the Green Technology Investment Tax Exemption (GITE) are pivotal in expanding green products and services.
Additionally, MGTC’s human capital development programmes are crucial for nurturing a skilled workforce ready to support the green economy. Their climate change mitigation efforts emphasise energy efficiency, renewable energy, low-carbon urban programmes, and low-carbon mobility solutions.
Public engagement and advocacy are cornerstones of MGTC’s mission. Programmes and events like the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) foster global cooperation between the government and private sectors, promoting green awareness and lifestyle changes.
MGTC’s ambitious objectives align with Malaysia’s commitments under the Paris Agreement. By 2030, the corporation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 45% based on GDP from 2005 levels, increase GDP from green technology to RM100 billion, and create 230,000 green jobs.
These targets underscore MGTC’s dedication to integrating economic growth with environmental sustainability and driving the energy transition.
MGTC’s Progressive initiatives
The Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) certification program under the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS) has resulted in annual energy cost savings of RM74 million. Public awareness campaigns, such as constructing a 1-tonne CO2 cube, educate the public on carbon emissions. The Anugerah Bandar Rendah Karbon 2023 award recognises local authorities committed to sustainable urban development, promoting low-carbon cities.
A highlight of MGTC’s efforts is the annual IGEM, now in its 15th year. IGEM 2024, themed “Race Towards Net Zero: Regional Leadership for Climate Urgency,” aims to solidify Malaysia’s leadership in green technology and the energy transition.
NRES Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad emphasised the urgency of climate action, stating, “The relevance of IGEM 2024 in addressing climate challenges is more significant than ever.”
Over the years, IGEM has generated RM53.1 billion in business leads, attracting over 4,000 exhibitors and 600,000 visitors from 122 countries. IGEM 2024 targets RM4.8 billion in business leads, 480 exhibitors, and 48,000 visitors from 48 countries under five sub-themes: empowering cities, electrifying mobility, decarbonizing energy, accelerating circularity, and conserving biodiversity. New attractions include a dedicated industry zone for hydrogen and carbon technologies, alongside a central zone showcasing innovations from global corporations.
The ongoing transition to electric vehicles (EVs) exemplifies Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable mobility, with MGTC spearheading this movement. Malaysia aims for EVs to account for 15% of the total industry volume (TIV) by 2030 and 80% by 2050, aligned with the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Shamsul Bahar underscores this commitment, saying, “The government’s ambitious goal of establishing 10,000 public charging points by 2025 highlights its dedication to facilitating EV adoption nationwide.” This infrastructure development is crucial for encouraging widespread EV use and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
MGTC’s strategic roles, clear objectives, and notable accomplishments addresses pressing environmental challenges while championing the transition to a green economy. This ensures that economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. As Malaysia races towards its net-zero goals, MGTC stands at the forefront, leading the charge with innovative programs, impactful events like IGEM, and a vision for a sustainable tomorrow.
