Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) will debut Malaysia Pavilion’s weekly trade and business programmes at Expo 2020 Dubai with the “Commercialisation – From Lab to International” value propositions, from 1 – 9 October 2021.
The first week programme will be featuring a delegation of several Malaysian start-ups, innovators and export-ready enterprises who will take part in transnational business-matching sessions, product presentations, pocket talks, technology demonstrations and business MoUs exchanges, spearheaded by TPM. The companies comprise those in the sectors of ICT, Advanced Engineering, Advanced Material, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Healthcare, Cosmetics and Medical Technologies.
The ultimate objective is to provide a platform to explore opportunities for global commercialisation collaboration and foster closer partnership and networks to scale-up their growth. The programme aims to provide participants opportunity to forge alliances and collaborations between nations, organisations and innovators via a shared global commercialisation platform.
More than 190 countries are participating in Expo 2020 Dubai themed “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, which is set to take place between 1 October 2021 and 31 March 2022. Malaysia’s overall participation at Expo 2020 Dubai is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) while Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) is the implementation agency.
TPM and MGTC today signed an agreement to define the role of TPM to spearhead the promotion of commercialisation at the Expo. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) document exchange ceremony between MGTC Chief Executive Officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor and TPM Acting Chief Executive Officer Sharbani Harun was witnessed by YB Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tuan Khairy Jamaluddin at the opening of the Malaysia Commercialisation Year (MCY) Summit 2020.
The MoA formalises the commitment of the custodian agency to organise promotional activities and focused programmes to seek business leads as well as contribute towards the target of RM500 million worth of potential trade and investment with participating nations for the week’s programme.
MOSTI is also the lead ministry for the ‘Commercialisation – From Lab to International Week’ together with its agency, TPM. Both parties will jointly facilitate events to be carried out at the Malaysian Pavilion to achieve the following commitments:
I. Promoting Malaysian IPs, technologies, products and services
II. Promoting Malaysia as a soft landing centre for innovation and commercialization hub for viable technology-based products and services fit for the ASEAN market
III. Fostering collaborations in commercialisation activities which include funding, IP, research, technology scouting, business matching and networking
IV. Establishing collaborators and MoU partners on international co-incubation, co-R&D&C&I of product and service initiatives in enhancing commercialisation success
V. Promoting Malaysia’s Technology Innovation Sandbox and Testbed for promising technology products and services.
TPM Acting Chief Executive Officer Sharbani Harun said TPM is progressing as Malaysia’s International Innovation Hub which incorporates a Living Lab and Technology Innovation Sandbox.
“Given TPM’s past accomplishment in heightening commercialisation rate among local enterprises and its vast network within ASEAN region, we are confident in simulating the success at the expo. It serves as a launching pad in spawning Malaysian technology companies while international collaborators are poised to expand their networking in ASEAN and Asia Pacific markets,” he added.
MGTC Chief Executive Officer Shamsul Bahar said the “Commercialisation – From Lab to International Week” will set the tone for Malaysia’s 26 weeks of thematic trade and business programmes for the Expo. These initiatives will be helmed and supported by 22 ministries, five state governments, 40 agencies and about 500 Malaysian companies.
“Each week is curated to cover sustainable industries that are key economic drivers for Malaysia,” he said, adding that he was pleased with the response by Malaysian participating companies who were unhindered by the economic impact of Covid-19 but rather they recognised the unparalleled opportunities Expo 2020 provided for them to explore new business prospects.
“Expo 2020 Dubai aims to deliver these aspirations and I am confident that our industries will benefit immensely from their participation,” he said, adding that Expo 2020 will set a pathway for industries to recover, revive and thrive from the ravages of Covid-19.
Shamsul Bahar also pointed out that Dubai has already established a global hub for startups and entrepreneurs with an ecosystem to support Dubai and the UAE’s innovation-driven economy, where global innovators, including from Malaysia, are offered the chance to scale-up in Dubai through its Scale2Dubai programme.
“The opportunities at Expo 2020 are also evident given that many participating countries have expressed their intentions to foster trade and business cooperation, and Expo 2020 has continued to gain support at the highest levels of countries.
“With strong support from our ministries, state governments and agencies, and strong participation from Malaysian companies, Malaysia will have so much to offer the world for collaborations, partnerships and knowledge sharing at Expo 2020 Dubai,” he added.
Malaysia’s theme for Expo 2020 Dubai is “Energising Sustainability”.
Technology Park Malaysia, an agency of MOSTI, has an integrated infrastructure, facilities and support services to assist technopreneurs and entrepreneurs who are keen to commercialise their ideas in the three industry clusters, namely, ICT, Engineering and Biotechnology.
