BANGI: The 2021 Budget reflects the government’s commitment to spurring the green economy agenda amidst the Covid 19 pandemic, said the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC).
In ensuring environmental sustainability and boosting the green economy, the government proposes to continue with the successful Green Technology Financial Scheme, with an allocation of RM2 billion, which would encourage the private sector, mainly the manufacturing and services industry, to participate in green technology, said its chief executive officer Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor.
He said similarly, the introduction of the Sustainability Bond under Sukuk Prihatin will also further support green economy growth.
Shamsul also applauds the introduction of the Save 2.0 programme, with an allocation of RM 30 million, to encourage households to purchase energy-efficiency appliances worth RM200.
“These initiatives contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions”.
He added that Budget 2021 also emphasizes on driving public awareness that environmental conservation matters.
“The government is also very much in line with promoting renewable energy as an alternative source of energy, with the support of the hydrogen economy. The narratives indicate that the government upholds the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its main focus,” he added.
